Good Pets Alphabetical Guide: S - Spiders
Although rats such as covered previously make good pets, spiders have many benefits as house companions.
For instance, caught, dead and decomposing in it's web, a fly makes a healthy, crunchy meal for a spider for several weeks. This means that when you go on holiday, all your pet has to do is periodically wander over to the web, rather like the pantry where you keep your foodstuffs, unwrap a bit and bite off extremities. Spiders love to snack.
As the spider bites the bony parts, it's teeth get good exercise and cleaning. The fly eventually disappears, the discarded bits either sticking to the web or falling harmlessly into your carpet.
Spiders feed almost entirely on insects. Hunter/killer spiders have well-developed senses of touch or sight and can quickly overpower their prey . Others make webs to catch prey, often catching more than they can eat. If your spider does this we recommend you clear it's web and prevent any flying insects getting near it for a week. This is useful training for your pet.
Caution
There are many types of spiders, all with different habits. Care should be taken, if you want to build up a relationship with your pet, to avoid those with cannibalistic tendencies, such as the black widow types. Although natural behaviour, the females, having eaten their partners, are often consumed with guilt and likely to withdraw. It is difficult for the spider to relate to it's owner for about 8 months after this.

Cleaning your pet
Spiders need very little cleaning if given enough room. It's not a bad idea from time to time to clean off the web so that your pet doesn't have last months dinner left-overs hanging around.
